How Much Is a Military Pension Worth? The Number Almost Nobody Puts on Their Balance Sheet

Ask most service members what their pension is worth and you get a monthly figure, a shrug, or “I’ll find out when I get there.” Almost nobody puts an actual number on it. They track their Thrift Savings Plan balance to the dollar, they know what is in the brokerage account, they can tell you their car’s trade-in value. But the single largest financial asset most military families will ever hold sits nowhere on the ledger, because it never shows up on a statement.

A pension is not a number in an account. It is a paycheck that keeps coming. And that paycheck has a price tag.

Here is how to fix it. A military pension has a real, estimable dollar value, and there is a clean way to price it. You do not need a spreadsheet full of assumptions to run the number. You need one piece of arithmetic and an honest read of what the result does and does not mean.

By the end of this you will be able to take your projected annual pension, run it through a method you can do on a napkin, and put a defensible figure on the balance sheet where a blank space used to be. So when you ask how much is a military pension worth, you have an actual answer instead of a shrug.


Why You’ve Never Put a Number on It

The blind spot is structural, not personal. A TSP balance shows up every time you log in. An IRA sends a statement. A brokerage account has a dollar figure at the top of the screen that moves every day. So those are the assets people track, because those are the assets the system hands them a number for.

The pension hands you nothing to look at. It is a promise of future income, not a balance, and future income does not render as a dollar amount anywhere you can see it. So the people most serious about building toward financial independence, the ones tracking every account and running their FI number, routinely leave the biggest piece off the ledger entirely. Not because they decided it did not count. Because nobody ever showed it to them as a number, so it stayed invisible.

Now look at the two decisions that number quietly sits underneath.

If you are weighing staying in versus getting out, you are really comparing two financial futures. One path keeps the pension in play. The other trades it for whatever you can earn and invest on the outside. That is a fork some readers are standing at right now, and you cannot compare the two futures honestly if one of them contains a large asset you have never priced. You would be putting a real number against a blank.

The same is true if you are simply mapping your FI number. Leave the pension out and your net worth reads low and your timeline reads long, both by a wide margin. The value of pricing the pension is not bragging rights. It is that several real decisions get more honest the moment the invisible asset becomes visible. How to Price a Military Pension

Here is the whole method in one move. To price an income stream as an asset, figure out what invested sum would produce that same income at a safe withdrawal rate. That sum is the income-equivalent value of the pension. It is the pile of money a civilian would have to build and hold to replicate the check you already have coming.

The arithmetic is a division.

Income-equivalent value  =  Annual pension  ÷  Safe withdrawal rate

Example:  $30,000 / yr  ÷  0.04  =  $750,000

A $30,000-a-year pension is the income equivalent of $750,000 invested and drawn at 4 percent. Not because the pension is a $750,000 check you can cash. Because $750,000 is what someone without a pension would have to accumulate to safely produce that same $30,000 every year. The division works because the safe withdrawal rate is just the fraction of a portfolio you can pull annually without draining it, so running it backward tells you how large the portfolio would have to be to produce a given income.

The safe withdrawal rate is a convention, not a law. It traces back to the research William Bengen published in 1994 and the Trinity Study that followed (Cooley, Hubbard, and Walz, 1998), and reasonable people argue about the right figure. That matters here, because the value swings hard depending on which rate you pick. So do not anchor on one. Look at the same pension across a range.

Run your own number the same way. Take your projected annual pension, divide by the rate you actually trust, and read the result. A lower rate produces a higher value, which feels backward until you see why: a portfolio drawn more cautiously has to be larger to safely throw off the same income, so a conservative 3 percent assumption implies a bigger equivalent asset than an aggressive 4 percent one. There is no single correct rate. Pick the one you are willing to stand behind, run your pension through it, and work with the number it gives you.


Estimating Your Annual Pension First

The method needs an annual figure to divide, so you need a rough estimate of your yearly pension before you can capitalize it. The formula is straightforward at the concept level.

A military pension pays a set percentage of your High-3 base pay for every year of service. Under the Blended Retirement System, that multiplier is 2.0 percent per year. Under the legacy High-3 system, it is 2.5 percent per year. High-3 means the average of your highest 36 months of base pay, which for most careers is the last three years before you retire.

So the structure is: your High-3, times your years of service, times your system’s multiplier, gives your annual pension. Twenty years under BRS lands at 40 percent of your High-3. The same twenty under legacy High-3 lands at 50 percent. That is the shape of the calculation, and it is enough to get a working estimate you can run through the division above.

What this article will not do is plug in a rank and a time-in-service and hand you “your pension is $X.” Your real figure depends on which system you fall under, your actual years served, your true High-3, and choices you have not made yet. Why the Pension Is Worth More Than the Math Says

Type “how much is a military pension worth” into a search bar and the instant answer you get back is some version of “multiply the annual amount by 25.” That is the 4 percent division in disguise, and it is not wrong. It is just incomplete, because it treats the pension as if it were an ordinary portfolio producing ordinary income. It is not. The capitalized number is a floor, not a ceiling, and two features push the real value above it.

The first is inflation protection. The military pension is adjusted annually for inflation through a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). That is not a minor footnote. A civilian drawing a fixed 4 percent from a portfolio has to fund every future inflation raise out of that same balance, which means the portfolio has to be bigger than the simple division suggests just to keep pace with rising costs over a long retirement. Your pension does that automatically. To truly match a COLA-adjusted income, a real portfolio would have to be larger than the raw capitalization implies.

The second is that the pension is uncorrelated to the market. It pays the same whether stocks are at record highs or in the worst year since 2008. A portfolio producing the same income carries sequence-of-returns risk, the danger that a bad stretch of returns early in your drawdown forces you to sell into the drop and does damage you never fully recover from. Your pension has none of that. The check arrives on schedule regardless of what the market did last quarter. Put those together and the honest claim gets narrower and stronger at the same time. The capitalized figure is what a portfolio would need to produce just to match the raw dollars. To match a pension that also self-funds its inflation raises and cannot be touched by a market crash, that portfolio would have to be bigger and better-behaved than the number on the chart. The pension is worth at least the capitalized amount, and arguably more.


What This Number Is, and What It Isn’t

The value only stays honest if you are clear about what it is not. Get this part wrong and you turn a useful estimate into a fantasy.

Start with the biggest one. This is an income-equivalent estimate, not a liquid balance. You cannot spend it, sell it, or borrow against it. Nobody is going to write you a check for $1.5 million because your pension pays $60,000 a year. The figure exists to let you see the asset on your balance sheet at a fair scale, next to accounts you actually can touch. It is real value, and it is real income, but it is not cash sitting somewhere waiting to be withdrawn.

Second, the number depends entirely on your assumptions. It moves with the withdrawal rate you pick, and it moves with your projected annual pension, and both of those are estimates. Change either input and the answer changes. That is not a flaw in the method. It is the reason to run the range instead of clinging to a single figure.

Third, the whole thing assumes you reach the pension. A pension you have not yet earned is a probability, not a certainty, and its value to you today has to account for the odds that you get there. This is the real weight sitting under the stay-or-go decision some readers are facing. The method prices the pension as if it vests. One more boundary. If you carry a VA disability rating, that compensation is a separate stream. It is tax-free, paid for life, and not market-linked, and it has its own value entirely. Do not fold it into the pension figure. Price it on its own if you price it at all.
